Foreward by Emma Martin
I first met Cara when we both started to think about re-branding our businesses in early 2020. Cara’s progress has been incredible, and it’s been amazing to watch her flourish, not only helping families to get more sleep but to open up the doors to her very own sleep school and empower other women to become their own boss! Cara is relatively new to the concept of Mindfulness, but truly understands the importance of her own self care whilst juggling work and Kids!
What does self care look like to you?
For me self care is about focusing on the things that will bring me back to feeling grounded and like myself. I read a lot, will put my phone down and do a workout, anytime I feel overwhelmed or like I need a break. I am one of those people who tends to take on everyone else’s emotions so finding time to exercise and meditate is paramount to my work and my family life.
What impact do you notice between lack of sleep and the wellbeing of your clients?
Most of my clients come to me when they have reached breaking point. They often aren’t sleeping in the same room as one another, aren’t getting evenings or any time to themselves. We can have some really emotional calls and there is a lot of guilt around sleep. Sleep deprivation can really prevent you from finding joy, often seeking out only the negatives.
What is your experience of Mindfulness?
I used to have a love hate relationship with it and thought that to be mindful would mean sitting for 30 minutes and working on my breath. I now find I can be mindful in really little moments like when I am hanging out the washing or in the car. I do meditate but for 5 or 10 minutes. I also find getting outside the easiest way for me to shift my mind and focus – nature is magical!
Why is supporting local business mum’s important to you?
I am incredibly passionate about mums being able to work and have a family life they can genuinely feel proud of. I believe all women can have a business and one they can fit flexibly around their family. This is why I created our business school to help women become Infant Sleep Coaches!
How do you juggle life as a working mum?
I have had to work really hard at setting boundaries. I now block off time and days in my calendar and ensure I have phone free time just for the children or myself. I sometimes don’t get the balance right and I am always working at the juggling bit! Having a good support system really helps too and I am lucky to have my husband here to help with the school run or to have the children whilst I do a workout.
